A Douala-based night watch man is said to have taken a child hostage demanding payment from the kid’s parents, The Guardian Post newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The guard in question, had gone for three months without salary and resorted to using the child to get his pay.
The incident that happened at the Ndongpassi neighborhood in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, attracted attention after the guard’s colleague realised that he had taken the child hostage and climbed on a tree.
“For several minutes the parents tried to beg him but he still failed to see reason. They finally accepted to pay all his money before he came down with the child,” the paper reports.
The incident, the paper reports, comes after a similar incident where another guard still in Douala rallied his family to besiege the residence of his employer who said the COVID-19 pandemic had made it difficult for him to pay the worker.
