Cameroon: Over 90% of nursery, primary schools are shutdown in the North West, South West

“Nine hundred and ninety five (995) primary and nursery schools are today functioning in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon”.
The above is part of statistics given by the Minister of Basic Education, Professor Laurent Serge Etoudi Ngoa in a press conference in Yaounde last Monday during which he stressed that the two Anglophone regions of Cameroon counted five thousand three hundred and seventy seven (5,377)primary and nursery schools before the start of the Anglophone crisis in 2016.

To what has happened to four thousand four hundred and eighty two(4,482) primary and nursery schools in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon, the Minister of Basic Education says the schools have either been burned down or destroyed, used as camps by Anglophone militiamen called Ambazonia boys or have mainly shutdown for fear of insecurity perpetrated by separatist fighters.

In a joint press conference granted Monday August 26, 2019 by the Ministers of Basic Education Laurent Serge Etoudi Ngoa, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Secondary Education Boniface Bayaola, The Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education Professor Jacques Fame Ndongo, Secretary of State to the Minister of Basic Education Dr. Asheri Kilo and the Minister of Communication Rene Emmanuel Sadi, the members of government applauded measures taken by the defense forces and those of national security to ensure effective school resumption in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon.

Critics say none of the schools destroyed in the North West and South West has been renovated or new ones constructed to permit effective school resumption in the regions. Beside, the present insecurity is equally scaring teachers posted in the regions to resume work.
Kidnappings, arbitrary arrests, killings and total insecurity continue to reign in the North West and South West regions prompting the massive movement of people from the regions.
