Cameroon: Ramadan Feast Declared For Wednesday

Muslims in Cameroon and beyond will on Wednesday, April 10, celebrate Eid-El-Fitr, otherwise known as the feast of Ramadan.

The Crescent Moon Association of Saudi Arabia said it was unable to see the moon on Monday evening.

Since the fasting does not exceed 30 days, it then declared Wednesday as feast day, marking the end of fasting on Tuesday, April 9.

“The crescent moon was NOT sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.” Haramain News wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“May Allah allow us to utilise the remaining moments of this blessed month to engage in that which pleases Him; may He accept our siyām, qiyām & a’māl & may He allow us to witness many more Ramadans in good health. Āmīn,” it added.

Fasting started globally on March 11, but in Cameroon, it started on March 12 because the Cameroon Crescent Moon Association did not see the month.

Now that Saudi Arabia has declared Wednesday a feast day, it remains to be seen whether Cameroon will respect it. If it does, then it means that while others fasted for 30 days, those who followed the Cameroonian Crescent Moon fasted for 29 days.

The month of Ramadan saw Muslims abstain from sex and eat between dawn and night, among other things.

It was a month characterized by arms-giving and other charitable activities.

During the feast, Muslims will gather in various prayer grounds where they will pray to Allah, preach love, and decry injustices, among other things.

So, if Wednesday is confirmed as a feast day in Cameroon, it is likely the day will be declared a public holiday by Paul Biya, President of the Republic of Cameroon.

After this moon of Ramadan, Muslims with means will embark on a holy pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia’s holy site.
