Cameroon rethinks phone tax after protests

The government of Cameroon is rethinking a phone tax that went operational days ago.

In a release this Monday from the Secretary of State, Secretary General at the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, he instructs the Prime Ministry’s office to “Oversee the suppression of the digital collection of customs duties and taxes on imported telephones and gadgets.”

The Prime Ministry on the high instructions of the head of state is also asked to submit “… a more appropriate mechanism for collecting the said customs duties and other taxes.”

The move comes after sustained online protests with many calling for the tax to be ended.

Does that mean the tax policy will die a natural death? Campaigners of #EndPhoneTax are expecting major steps in that regard.
