Cameroon: School resumption in the heart of coronavirus

Some schools as well as large sections of Cameroonian society such as markets and housing suffer from a perennial problem of overcrowdedness.

As schools are re-opening across Cameroon, social distancing measures are being put in place to prevent overcrowdedness because of the coronavirus pandemic. Students are expected to study in shifts, with some learning in the morning and others in the afternoon.
Primary and secondary schools have already resumed today Monday 5th October, while universities expected to reopen on the 15th of October.

According to guidelines released by the government of Cameroon, all students, apart from those in classes one to three are expected to mandatorily wear masks. Other measures such as the putting in place of handwashing points around school premises and improving general hygiene are expected to come in to force.

Schools across Cameroon closed in March this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. While the pandemic has not been as widespread as initially predicated, schools remained closed with the exception of final year students who returned to sit for their examinations.

In the restive Anglophone regions, however, the situation remains complex as factions of separatists continue to insist that there will be no school resumption.
