Cameroon: Separatist fighters threaten to mar much trumpeted CHAN project

The Cameroon government has for the past months fought to beat a series of deadlines to show its readiness for the African Football Championship, CHAN.

In addition to slow contractors, government had to, through the personal supervision of top officials, see that timelines were respected alongside work quality.

The bone that has refused to slide down the state’s throat, however, is the armed conflict in the minority English-speaking regions. With separatist fighters threatening violence, the government has had to beef up security in the towns of Buea and Limbe.

In a video making rounds on social media, a supposed armed fighter identified as ‘Gen Presido’ has threatened to wreak havoc if games for the competition are played in the region.

He, like some other separatists, also reiterated calls for a ghost town in Fako division from January 19 to 23rd.

A note on social media adds that “normal ghost towns on Mondays are maintained…”

If only for fear of the unknown, it is already almost certain that the turnout, fanfare and camaraderie in the regions will no longer be as epic, as many chose to not risk their lives.

In a bid to combat the move, an increased military presence has been put up in the South West region which is set to host group D games.

Notwithstanding, many say government keeps eluding the safest possible course of action which should be dialogue and not the military option.
