Cameroonian Baritone Opera singer features among America’s best

By Amina Hilda

Cameroonian Baritone Opera singer, Aurelien Mangwa, has secured a place among the best American Opera singers.

The Metropolitan Opera, renowned for promoting excellence in the opera realm, featured Aurelien Mangwa as one of the winners in its esteemed Laffont Competition.

The competition, organized by the Washington District in the United States, recognized Aurelien Mangwa alongside four other exceptional talents.

Mangwa, who lives in Washington DC, specifically received an Encouragement Award in the Baritone voice category, solidifying his standing in the competitive world of opera.

Expressing his feeling on his Facebook page, the Mangwa dedicated the victory to his late father, Ngasa Mangwa Michel, who died when he was at a tender age.

“He left us when I was still very young, in middle school Class 1 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Not only has he never listened to me sing, if so, He listens to me from up there, sitting next to the Creator; but also he did not know that he brought to the world an OPERA SINGER (Intellectual Music),” Mangwa wrote.

He dedicated the award to his late father, expressing gratitude for the values and integrity instilled in him.

“This is an important victory for me Dad, and I would like the whole world to know that you existed, you exist and you continue to watch over us, over me.

“Receive this award, a sign of my loyalty and to the dignity that you have transmitted to us to be men of value and integrity in this society where we are all passing through,” he added.

The news of Aurelien Mangwa’s success reverberated on social media, with congratulations pouring in from well-wishers and fellow Cameroonians.

Blanche Ariana said, “Congratulations. Any father would be proud of such a son… Thank you also for raising the tricolor flag high.”

Jasmine Mengue, another social media user, wrote, “Congratulations dear compatriot! Lots of courage and even more success for the future.”

Aurelien Mangwa’s achievement adds another remarkable name to the growing list of Cameroonian talents making waves on the international stage.

Joining the ranks of individuals like Libianca and Francis Ngannou, Mangwa’s recognition underscores the global impact of Cameroonian excellence across diverse fields.
