Cameroonian basketball star, Joel Embiid, to obtain French nationality, play for France

By Amina Hilda

Cameroon’s renowned Basketball player Joel Embiid is said to be envisaging obtaining French nationality and playing in the country’s basketball national team.

Many Cameroonians are however not surprised by this move, considering his declarations some few years ago.

In 2018, the player revealed his intentions to join the Cameroon basketball team on the condition that things are carried out in an organised manner.

According to him, the Cameroon Basket Ball Federation was not ready to give him medical assurances.

Some French Basketballers have expressed their wish to see the Cameroon basketball player, join their team. Boris Diaw said of Embiid: “I know that he personally carried out naturalization modalities to play for France. We will simply wait for the process to be completed”.

Meanwhile other French basketball players see his move as baseless. “Why play for a country with which you have no links? It is disturbing. Where is the respect for those who work hard to defend her colors? ” said Evan Fournier.

It should be noted that the 28-year-old star was recently crowned highest scorer at the NBA this season.

It is however reported that there is a possibility for the player to return to the Cameroon Basketball team in case his request is rejected by France.
