Cameroonian comedian Dr Sensology making waves with imaginary Oku Airlines

At just 23 years old, Rigobert Banseka, popularly known as Dr Sensology, has carved a unique space for himself in the world of comedy, gaining local and national attention for his imaginative creation, Oku Airlines.

Hailing from Oku, in the North West Region of Cameroon, Dr. Sensology has embarked on a creative journey that blends humour, cultural representation, and a touch of fantasy.

His journey into the realm of comedy began in 2021, when he started capturing the hearts of many with his distinctive content featuring an imaginary aircraft named Oku Airlines.

His creative storytelling involves transporting personalities on his unique local plane, ingeniously fashioned out of a broomstick.

Humble beginnings

In an exclusive interview with MMI, Dr. Sensology shared insights into his comedy journey.

“From the onset, there was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. The support I received from my entourage was the driving force. In school, I understood there was a lot of creativity in me. I wrote poems, novels, public speaking, and a whole lot of other activities,” he said.

He further explained that at a certain point, he began asking himself how he could forge to commercialise his arts and creativity, “and the best way was through content creation.”

Not void of setbacks

Monetizing his art, however, presented challenges, particularly with the ineligibility for Facebook monetization in Cameroon.

Despite this, he disclosed alternative sources of income, including funds from donors, advertisements, marketing deals, and earnings from stand-up comedy performances.

Addressing challenges faced in his domain, Dr. Sensology highlighted the struggle to positively impact society through his skits and creative works.

“The major challenge I face is trying to impact society through my skits and creative works. At times, people misinterpret contents, especially the notion of coming from Oku and trying to play the role of a native doctor,” he said.

Despite facing negativity, Dr. Sensology transforms these challenges into comedy, using laughter to bridge cultural gaps and showcase the richness of Oku.

Expressing his aspirations for Oku Airlines, Dr. Sensology revealed a desire to transform the concept from static photos to real-time videos.

“I’d love to transform the concept of Oku Airlines from normal photos to real-time videos, but I lack the gadgets.

“To set this up, I need an after-effects studio with green screens, lights, and machines. I’ve invested the best possible time in learning some of these editing skills and if I have the gadgets to put my knowledge and skills to practice, I’ll surprise many people with what I can do
Comedy is my passion, and I’ve decided to invest my time and energy into it,” he said.

The 23-year-old lamented the lack of knowledge and competencies of Cameroonian comedians, calling for mentorship and the sharing of expertise to empower the younger generation.

“I tried my best to organise stand-up comedy shows and get the public used to these events. If they can be multiplied, it will go a long way towards helping Cameroonian talents,” he noted.

“Although other countries like Nigeria are not eligible for monetization, they share knowledge, making it easier. We really need people who have these competencies and can help younger ones cash out from their arts. Without a lot of resilience, I’d have given up a long time ago. Many of my brothers give up the same way because of depression and frustration. They do arts, and at the end of the day, they get nothing from it.”

Family background and education

Born on August 6, 2000, in Oku, Banseka Rigobert Nsa, aka Dr. Sensology, pursued his education in various parts of Cameroon, culminating in a Master’s Degree from the University of Dschang in 2023.

After attending nursery and early primary school at C.S. Elak, Oku, he moved to Tatum, in Kumbo, where he completed primary school before enrolling at GBHS Tatum for secondary school.

He obtained Ordinary Levels at GBHS Tatum and then enrolled at GBHS Kumbo, where he studied History, Literature, and Philosophy (A1 Series) in high school.

This resulted in him receiving an Advanced Level certificate in 2017, a First Degree in Bilingual Letters in 2021, and a Master’s Degree in 2023 from the University of Dschang.

Despite difficulties, Dr. Sensology perseveres in his pursuit of comedy because he is passionate about adding to the Cameroonian entertainment industry.
