Cameroonian Marathoner Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy Set to Make History in Antarctica

Cameroonian long-distance runner Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy, known as the Toghu Marathoner, is on the verge of making history. On March 25, 2025, he will become the first and fastest man to run a marathon in Antarctica while wearing Toghu, Cameroon’s iconic traditional regalia. His objective in taking on this feat is to blend endurance, cultural pride, and global recognition.

Running for a Cause

Fondzenyuy, a seasoned marathoner with 18 races spanning six continents and over 757 kilometers, has leveraged his athleticism as a platform for advocacy. From fundraising for education and promoting disability inclusion to financing the construction of a community bridge in Ngondzen, in Cameroon’s North-West region, his marathons serve a purpose far beyond personal achievement. The bridge project, currently under construction, stands as a testament to his commitment to social impact.

A Record-Breaking Journey

His rise to international fame came with a record-breaking feat at the Tokyo Marathon, where he secured a Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon run in traditional African attire. This remarkable achievement, completed under the global spotlight of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, solidified his identity as an athlete who runs not just for victory but for a cause. The Toghu-clad runner has since become a symbol of Cameroonian culture on the world stage.

Now, Antarctica presents his next and most formidable challenge yet. Running in temperatures as low as -20°C, Fondzenyuy aims to complete his mission of running in Toghu across six continents. More than just a test of physical and mental endurance, this endeavor underscores the resilience of an entire people and the power of representation in sports.

A Race for Inclusion

His Antarctic run is also tied to another philanthropic goal—raising funds to establish a school for children with disabilities in Cameroon. For Fondzenyuy, running is not just a sport but a vehicle for change. His unwavering passion for education and inclusion fuels his every stride, making each race a stepping stone toward meaningful transformation.

“Every time I run in Toghu, I carry my people with me,” Fondzenyuy shared. “Antarctica is more than just a race; it’s a statement of endurance, of culture, of breaking limits. And with every step, I hope to inspire others to chase their own impossible dreams.”

Cementing His Legacy

His achievements have already positioned him as both a cultural and sports ambassador. Plans are underway to donate his Guinness World Record-winning Toghu outfit to Cameroon’s National Museum, ensuring his legacy is enshrined for future generations.

As the Antarctic Ice Marathon draws near, Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy is making his way from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia—the world’s southernmost city—before embarking on a vessel to Antarctica. With the race of a lifetime just days away, he will redefine the limits of human endurance and cultural representation.

With every step on the icy terrain, Fondzenyuy will once again prove that endurance is more than physical strength.
