Cameroonian musician Asaba takes record label to court

Cameroonian musician Mary Asaba has taken her record label, Starfish Entertainment, to court, the record label has revealed.

Starfish Entertainment revealed on Thursday, January 25, that Asaba has taken legal action against them, citing breaches of the existing contract among other grievances.

“We have been taken to court by our female artist Asaba,” Starfish Entertainment announced.

The record label cautioned individuals engaged in or contemplating any business dealings with Asaba without their consent.

They emphasized that legal actions might follow if anyone ventures into such engagements.

“This is an official caution to anyone presently doing business with or planning to do business with the artist without the consent of the record label. Note that legal actions may follow should anyone venture,” the press release stated.

The revelation has stirred reactions on social media, with some expressing dissatisfaction and urging the parties involved to seek an amicable resolution through dialogue.

Dama Fon, a Facebook user, commented, “As a businessman, you guys need to stop all this rubbish look for a way, and solve the problem; this is not the solution instead you are bringing out your dirty laundry into the public.”

Chanty Nash also weighed in, highlighting the recurrent nature of disputes between Cameroonian record labels and their artists.

“If it’s not Rinyu, it’s Kameni. Now it’s the turn of Asaba. It’s well!” she remarked, indicating a pattern of conflicts within the music industry.

The timing of this legal dispute is notable, as it follows closely after Asaba’s release of a new song related to the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), titled “Yelema Africa.”

The artist, however, has not made any official statement regarding the details of the legal issue at stake.

Starfish Entertainment has been responsible for producing and marketing Asaba’s music since 2020, during which she released her hit song Mon Bebe.

She has released several songs as well and has solidified her position as one of Cameroon’s most promising female artists.
