Cameroonian police must prove their worth by tracking Martinez Zogo’s assassins – Bar Council

By Tata Mbunwe

The Cameroon Bar Association is the latest institution to call for justice for slain radio host, Martinez Zogo, who was found dead on the outskirts of Yaounde on Sunday, January 22.

In a release by Bar President, Mbah Eric Mbah, signed on Monday, Cameroonian lawyers challenged the country’s forces of law and order — to track down the late journalist’s assassins to prove their worth.

Also citing the recent killing of a Douala-based lawyer, Barrister Diboma, by hoodlums, the Bar President noted that insecurity is becoming an issue of national concern in Cameroon.

“The Cameroon Bar condemns the abduction and brutal killing of Arsene Salomon Mbani Zoko, more popularly known as Martinez Zogo, a journalist and managing director of a Yaounde-based private radio station,” the President stated.

“The Cameroon Bar challenges the forces of law and order as well as our investigation units to prove their worth by tracking down these assassin’s and bringing them to book,” he further said.

He regretted that “a general atmosphere of insecurity is steadily taking over our cities, characterised by frequent killings of citizens.”

The killing of Martinez Zogo has drawn wide condemnation from national and international stakeholders, who have termed it an attack on the press.

The journalist was abducted about 8pm in Yaounde on Tuesday, January 17, on his return from work.

Reports say his abducted caught him just before he could reach a police station for safety. His body was only found at Soa, on the outskirts of Yaounde, when it was already decomposing.

The Government of Cameroon condemned the killing and promised to investigate and bring the perpetrators to book.
