Cameroonian schools embark on Christmas holiday, classes to resume Jan. 3

By Cindy Lemu

Schools in Cameroon officially shut their doors on Friday, December 16, ending three months of learning for the First Term of the 2022/2023 academic year.

The two-week holiday period will be characterized by two euphoric celebrations of the year, Christmas (on Dec. 25) and new year celebrations on Jan. 1.

Students and teachers will resume classes for the Second Term on January 3, based on the official school calendar released by the Ministries of Secondary and Basic Education in September.

However, higher learning institutions, who have only been in school for two months, will be resuming to continue the First Semester of learning.

Before sending students on Christmas break, some Primary and Secondary schools organised parties and award ceremonies to send off their students or pupils.

In Buea, South West regional headquarters, schools like Bilingual Grammar School (BGS) Molyko cautioned it’s students on how they should go about the end of year festivities.

They were told to be grateful to the little things their parents can afford for them during Christmas and New Year, especially given the economic hardship and inflation in the country.

Students were also told to be cautious about what they engage in during the short break, so that they may resume school on time.

“I will be very careful during this holidays so that I can resume my studies on time,” said Mary Atebong, a Form Four student of BGS.
