Cameroonian Whistleblower Abducted After Exposing Election Fraud

A whistleblower in Cameroon is reported to have been abducted after exposing videos of alleged election fraud.

Djoubaierou went missing last month in Ngaoundere, Adamawa Region.

People familiar with his abduction have ilinked it to a video he shared exposing election manoeuvering.

Recently, a video circulated in which a man, dressed in the uniform of the ruling CPDM party was in possession of hundreds of national identification cards.

That video generated controversy on social media, with many saying the ID cards are to be used for registering for elections.

In Cameroon, only the General Delegation for National Security (DGSN) issues ID cards.

Many actually questioned why an individual dressed in CPDM regalia should be in possession of hundreds of ID cards.

This comes at a time when Cameroonians are facing calls to massively enroll on the voter’s list.

Why Abduct a Whistleblower Prior to Elections?

A Cameroonian opposition politician, Maurice Kamto, said reliable sources ascertain that Djoubaierou is the author of the famous video.

Kamto wrote: “In the video, he denounced CPDM electoral fraudsters who, he claimed, were acting on the orders of a former member of the National Assembly for the Vina Division in the Adamaoua Region, Mr. Ali Bachir.”

He condemned Djoubaierou’s abduction as a barbaric act that, although it has become a modus operandi of the government, is unacceptable.

“We strongly condemn them,” Kamto said.

“It would be wrong for any Cameroonian to look on with indifference, as the CPDM regime wants, through these acts of terror, to reduce us to total silence.”

To him, it is criminal for an individual to possess thousands of ID cards, especially prior to elections.

The abduction of the whistleblower, he asserted, lends credence to the accusations of election fraud made in the video.

Kamto has urged the government to do everything in its power to urgently find Djoubaierou.

He is equally accusing the former Parliamentarian for Vina of orchestrating the abduction.

“The government spokesperson must enlighten public opinion on this villainous affair against a backdrop of electoral fraud,” Kamto said.

He added that the former MP implicated in the denunciation video bears at least moral responsibility for the disappearance of this young compatriot.

“He therefore has a moral obligation to help find him alive and well, with the same zeal with which he wrote his false statement,” Kamto said.
