‘Cameroonians are a free people’ – Fame Ndongo

Higher Education Minister, Professor Jacques Fame Ndongo has addressed several concerns raised by Cameroonians these past days.

Among many issues, the politician who doubles as Communication Secretary for the ruling CPDM party said Cameroonians are a free people.

French Cameroon, he noted, got its independence 60 years ago in a “ceremony presided over by Mr Ahmadou Ahidjo, first president of French Cameroon…”

“For Cameroonians of English expression, independence was given on the 1st of October 1961 alongside reunification with French Cameroon,” he added.

Will there therefore be a “liberation in liberation”, [or] to rephrase the famous essay by the French philosopher Regis Debray “revolution within the revolution”?
He asked.

Fame Ndongo also highlighted aspects of solidarity and fraternity of the Cameroonian people, prisoners and justice, elections and tribalism.

He ended by quoting long time ruler, President Paul Biya on 4th October, 1991: “If we are sure to speak on behalf of the people, why should we be afraid to resort to sanctioning of the people?” Let us have the patriotic reflex of going before the people to solicit the right to represent them and to act in their name.”

Fame Ndongo’s outing comes amidst several issues including stifled freedom of speech and allegations of foreign interference into the country’s politics.
