Health and medical kits worth 2 billion francs are being distributed in the ten regions of Cameroon. The materials, Cameroon’s Minister of territorial administration says are “gifts” from President Paul Biya.
The use of the term “Presidential Gift” leaves many questioning if Paul Biya as an individual used his personal money to purchase the goods or the materials are from the president of Caneroon that has the responsibility to ensure that citizens are in good health.
According to Fabrice Lena, communication officer of the Popular Action Party “the President cannot use his personal money to finance the purchase of the materials when huge money collected from Cameroonians through direct and indirect taxes, donations from individuals, NGOs and friendly countries is not accounted for by the government headed by President Paul Biya”.
The young politician wonders aloud if one can draw a line between the wealth of President Paul Biya and that of the state of Cameroon. He points that “Cameroonians have just received a little from what has been taken away from them by the President and his government”.
To Minister Paul Atanga Nji, the materials depict the human face of President Paul Biya. Some critics say President Paul Biya should not be seen here as a humanitarian;giving for free but as a President who has an obligation to ensure the health of citizens.
