Cameroonians in South Korea Mourn Fred Neba
Cameroonians in South Korea are facing the sudden loss of one of its beloved members, Mr. Fred Neba, fondly referred to as “Bro DJ.” Fred, a cherished DJ and entrepreneur, died in the early hours of Wednesday, October 23, 2024, allegedly from a suspected cardiac arrest. Attempts were made to revive him with CPR, and an ambulance was called, but sadly, it is thought that Fred may have died either on the way to the hospital or shortly after reaching it. An official autopsy is underway to establish the precise cause of death.
Fred Neba, a prominent figure in the Cameroonian community for over a decade, was far more than just a DJ. Renowned for his love of music, he infused joy and rhythm into numerous events throughout South Korea with his performances. His exceptional skill behind the decks garnered him recognition, not only among his fellow Cameroonians but also within the wider African diaspora in South Korea. Many remember his talent for uplifting spirits and uniting people through his lively mixes.
The announcement of his passing has deeply affected the community, leading to a surge of sorrow and sincere remembrances. A close friend, still processing the shock, remarked, “What sad news.” Untimely death indeed. What a waste. My deepest condolences to the close ones. He has left the journey under the sun to start a new journey in the realm of the spirits.”
“Fred was not just a friend but a brother to many of us, and his absence will be profoundly felt. My heart goes out to his wife and children during this incredibly painful time,” wrote another.
Azongha Sylvie, echoing the shock many felt, wrote on social media: “Jesusssssss this can’t be true wat happen oooooooh weeeeh this life ooooooh chaii no no Fred how chaii.” Another emotional message from Blaze Keng read, “Hmmmm Neba Fred what happened, my Brother. JOURNEY WELL.”
Fred’s impact reached far beyond his work as a DJ. An entrepreneur, he established the brand “Bro We Do How,” which became a widely used expression among Cameroonians, signifying “What’s up?” His merchandise line includes tracksuits, t-shirts, and sweatpants, achieving success in South Korea and countries like the United States, Nigeria, and Cameroon.
Fred was active on social media, captivating a substantial audience. His final Facebook reel, shared mere days before his passing, provided a touching testimony to his passion for music. The video, titled “Smooth Amapiano Mashup – Amen – Kocee remix,” showed him fully engaged in his passion, doing what he cherished most. The timing of this post deepens the sorrow of the tragedy, particularly as the song he performed contained the lyrics, “praying for untimely death.” The unsettling coincidence has had an impact on a sizable number of people in the community.
One of his friends reflected on this, saying, “It’s hard to believe that just a few days ago, Fred was alive, full of energy, doing what he loved. Now, he’s gone. It reminds us of how fragile life is.”
red’s wife and two young children, along with his extended family in Cameroon, now face the sorrow of this unexpected loss. A close associate characterised Fred as “a generous, kind-hearted, and easygoing individual who was always willing to lend a hand or share a smile.”
The community is currently developing plans to repatriate Fred’s body to Cameroon, where his family will honour him with a final resting place. As they embark on this challenging journey, an outpouring of prayers and support -urrounds his loved ones. His passing has created a gap that will be difficult to bridge, yet his influence will remain in our memories for a long time.
A member of the community expressed an emotional statement about life’s fleeting nature: “Those we love and lose remain connected by heartstrings into infinity.” During times like these, we remember that life is fragile. Every minute, someone leaves this world. We must make each moment count.”
Fred Neba, known as “Bro DJ,” impacted countless lives through his music, kindness, and giving nature. Though his life ended too soon, his legacy endures in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
