Cameroon’s conflict-stricken regions in severe need of drinking water – UN humanitarian agency

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Cameroon has cited parts of the North West, South West and Far North Regions as some of the most desperate parts of the country in terms of basic water needs.

It made the revelation on this year’s occasion of world water day.

“Access to drinking water, basic hygiene & sanitation services remains inadequate in Cameroon, particularly in areas affected by humanitarian crisis,” OCHA noted, adding that “in 2021, more than 1.6 million people need humanitarian assistance to access these services”.

“57% of the population in the Far-North Region does not have access to drinking water. The region is affected by displacement caused by continuous violence & recurrent floods,” OCHA Cameroon added in a tweet.

According to an OCHA map demonstrating the prevailing situation, some of the areas with the most severe water shortage include the Logone and Chari, Mayo Tsanaga and the Mayo Danay divisions in the Far North region.

Divisions such as Manyu, Menchum, Meme, Ngoketunjia and Bui in the North West and South West Regions were not left out.
