Cameroon’s oldest Catholic Diocese sets stage for 75th anniversary

The oldest Roman Catholic Diocese in Cameroon, the Diocese of Buea, has launched its 75th anniversary celebrations, an occasion reserved for next year to commemorate the canonical erection of the Diocese in 1950.

The 75th anniversary was launched Thursday, April 18, at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral in Buea, with a solemn mass celebrated by Bishop Michael Bibi.

The Buea Diocese was erected on April 18, 1950, by Pope Pius XII on April 18th, 1950, making it the first Diocese to be established in Cameroon.

Now, as the diocese enters its 75th year, Bishop Michael Bibi leads the faithful in inaugurating a year-long celebration of faith, unity, and progress.

A highlight of the anniversary festivities includes the gathering of bishops from across Cameroon for their annual seminar, scheduled to take place in Buea from January 4th to 11th, 2025.

Additionally, on January 5th, the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral will be consecrated as the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Center, signifying a significant milestone in the diocese’s history.

Throughout the year, celebrations will extend to the seven deaneries that comprise the Diocese of Buea, bringing together congregations from various parishes to partake in the jubilant events.

Special gatherings will also be organized with apostolic prayer and action groups, fostering spiritual unity and camaraderie among the faithful.

Moreover, the diocese plans to engage with educational institutions and various service organizations, emphasizing the integral role of faith in every aspect of community life.

As part of the anniversary activities, construction projects at the pastoral center will be completed, enhancing the diocese’s capacity to serve its members effectively.

“The christians know the importance of the structure and we have informed the Christians and they are all excited to see to it that the bishops will be able to use accomodation that the Diocese has prepared,” said Mgr Michael Bibi.

He added: “I am very confident that by December ending, the work at the Divine Mercy Co-cathedral would have come to completion both inside the church and down at the basement. Also the structure for the bishop by the generosity of the church and others will be completed by November.”
