CAS reduces Onana’s football ban to 9 months

The Court of Arbitration for Sports has reduced the 12 months ban placed on Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana for dopping.

UEFA had found that in October 2020, the Dutch-based player consumed furosemide, a banned substances for athletes in Europe.

André Onana however denied any wrongdoing and insisted that he had mistakenly taken medication meant for his partner and that he had no intentions of cheating.

Onana appealed the ban to CAS, who has now reduced the ban from an initial 12 months to 9 months.

In the statement which officially reduced Onana’s ban, CAS said that the “Court of Arbitration for Sports Panel found that no significant fault could be attributed to Andre Onana who had ingested medication destined for another person in error…”

The CAS panel however maintained that a 9 months of suspension from all football related activities is necessary due to the negligence and carelessness of the player.

The request for the ban to be completely scalped was overlooked by CAS.

The ban slammed on Onana is expected to end on November 3, 2021.
