Catholic Priest Condemns Brenda Biya’s Lesbianism, Calling Homosexuality a ‘Cultural Abomination’

Reverend Father Humphrey Tata Mbuy, a Roman Catholic priest and the spokesperson for the National Episcopal Conference in Cameroon, has stated that homosexuality is fundamentally opposed to African cultural values. In a recent interview with Catholic news outlet Cruxnow, he declared, “Homosexuality is a deviation and cannot be given a green card.”

Father Tata Mbuy’s remarks came in response to an Instagram post by Cameroon’s first daughter, Brenda Biya, showing her kissing Brazilian model Layyons Valença.

Commentators have noted that Reverend Tata Mbuy’s views appear to be personal, as the Catholic Bishops have not issued an official statement regarding the controversy sparked by Brenda Biya’s sexual orientation.

“Morality neither depends on the majority nor on status. Whether it is Brenda Biya or an unknown entity, homosexuality is a deviation and cannot be given the green card,” said Father Tata Mbuy.

The Catholic priest emphasised, “The Catholic Church will never change its stance about the sinfulness of homosexuality.” However, he also pointed out that while the Church disapproves of same-sex relationships, it still supports homosexual individuals. “The Church continues to show concern and love towards those involved, because just like Christ, while condemning sin, he was close to sinners seeking their conversion,” he elaborated.

Father Tata Mbuy’s comments come amidst a notable silence from the Catholic Bishops in Cameroon, who have previously been outspoken against same-sex relationships. This silence follows the public revelation of Brenda Biya’s lesbianism.

It is worth recalling that members of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon (NECC) strongly opposed a document released by the Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith (DDF) on December 18, 2023, which permitted the blessing of “same-sex couples” and couples in other “irregular situations.”

“We therefore declare non-compliant any form of blessing, public or private, that tends to recognize ‘same-sex couples’ as a state of life,” the Cameroonian Bishops stated last December.
