Cavaye Yeguie Djibril returned home
Veteran Cameroonian politician Cavaye Yeguie Djibril has returned to the Far North region after decades at the helm of the National Assembly, drawing sharply contrasting reactions that are now fueling debate about shifting political loyalties in the region.
His arrival on Saturday at the Maroua-Salak International Airport, aboard a Camair-Co flight, was expected to signal a triumphant homecoming. Instead, it exposed a more complex political reality, marked by a subdued reception in Maroua and an overwhelming show of support in his native Mada.
At exactly 4:10 p.m., Djibril stepped onto the tarmac in Maroua to a reception that was respectful but notably restrained. A small group of elites from Kolofata, a handful of militants from the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), and a lone banner formed the visible core of the welcome.
The absence of a large, mobilised crowd—often a hallmark of high-profile political returns in Cameroon—did not go unnoticed. Even more striking was the low turnout of senior party officials from across the region’s six divisions.
The moment appeared unusually quiet for a political figure who had spent more than three decades as one of the country’s most powerful institutional actors.
Behind the measured applause, observers noted a deeper undercurrent. Conversations among attendees suggested unease, while the silence of key political actors raised speculation about a possible recalibration of alliances within the ruling party.
Was this a deliberate distancing by regional elites? A sign of internal fractures? Or simply a reflection of evolving political priorities in the Far North?
If Maroua hinted at hesitation, Mada told a different story.
In Djibril’s home locality—where he also serves as Lamido, a first-class traditional ruler—the atmosphere shifted dramatically. Thousands gathered in a vibrant display of loyalty, with traditional dances, songs, and chants filling the air.
The reception here was not only warm, but it was also overwhelming.
The scale of mobilisation in Mada appeared to counterbalance the subdued tone in Maroua, sending what many analysts interpret as a clear message: while political elites may be recalibrating, grassroots support for Djibril remains intact.
This stark contrast between institutional reserve and popular enthusiasm underscores the layered nature of political legitimacy in Cameroon—where formal power structures and local influence do not always align.
Though no longer presiding over the National Assembly, Djibril remains a significant figure within the RDPC as president of its permanent regional committee in the Far North.
His return comes at a time when political dynamics in the region appear to be shifting, with emerging actors, generational changes, and evolving alliances gradually reshaping the landscape.
For some observers, the restrained استقبال in Maroua may reflect these emerging dynamics, while the massive turnout in Mada highlights the enduring قوة of traditional authority and personal networks.
Djibril’s return raises broader questions about what comes next.
Is this a simple homecoming after years in national office, or the beginning of a more calculated political repositioning?
The timing, the mixed reactions, and the symbolism of the reception across different locations suggest that this moment could mark the start of a new phase—both for the veteran politician and for the Far North’s political configuration.
As Cameroon’s political scene continues to evolve, one question now lingers in both political circles and public discourse: is Cavaye Yeguie Djibril closing a chapter or preparing to write a new one?
