Chadians flee to safety as military junta takes control

Thousands of Chadians have been running into the Far North region of Cameroon as political instability becomes frightening in the country following the death of President Idriss Deby Itno Tuesday, April 20th, 2021.

“Men, women and children from Chad carrying their beddings and little food stuffs have been crossing the bridge over river Logone to Cameroon, ” an inhabitant of Maroua in the Far North Region of Cameroon has told Mimi Mefo Info on phone.

According to our source, the refugees, while in villages and towns in Cameroon, spent last night in public places as the government of Cameroon has not previewed any lodging facility at the moment though the region is the seat of the biggest refugee camp in the country.

Back in Chad, a 14-day period of national mourning has been declared by the Military Transitional Council headed by General Mahamat Idriss Deby, son of the fallen head of state.

Report says rebels fighting against the government are determined to take over power. Fear of the unknown, observers say, is pushing citizens South of the country to flee to the Republic of Cameroon for safety.
