CHAN: Japoma Stadium hosts first International Match today

There is growing anxiety in Douala ahead of the first African Football Championship March to take place in the city.

As Libya takes on Niger at Japoma 50.000 capacity stadium Sunday, January 17th, 2021 as from 5:00 pm to mark a first group B march, football lovers have been expressing diverse views.

To some Cameroonians, they are not fans of neither Libya nor Niger though still have reasons to go and watch the match. To Stephen Akumbo; a Douala inhabitant, “I bought my ticket for the match because first I want to enter Japoma stadium and see the beauty of the architectural piece. In the process, I will watch the match but there are no stakes for me. No tension. Any team can win”.

“I am very busy and will not have time to watch the match either on TV or to go to the stadium.” To Oumarou Dauda, a commercial motorcycle, football matches do not really interest him. He wonders why part of Cameroon is experiencing war while others are celebrating.

With some Douala City dwellers just interested in visiting Japoma’s new stadium and renovated Omniport stadium, there are fears that the stadia might go empty in Douala as the African Football championship progresses in Groups B and C that are hosted in the economic capital.

Still today Sunday, January 17th, DR Congo will take on Congo for a second group B match beginning at 8:00pm still at Japoma stadium.
