Cholera Epidemic: Douala Records one death

The city of Douala is facing a resurgence of Cholera in some of its neighborhoods. In total, over 10 cases of the Cholera Epidemic have now been detected in the economic capital, amongst which is one person who has succumbed to the disease.

The recent outbreak was at the center of discussion at a crisis meeting that was organized at the Nylon District Hospital by the Littoral Regional Office for the fight against epidemics.

According to experts during the meeting, the neighborhoods in danger of witnessing more cases, if care is not taken, include Bepanda, Youpwe, Banger, Bonassama, and Manoca.

The neighborhoods cited by experts are noted for extremely poor hygiene, poorly drained toilets, consumption of badly prepared food, and inaccessibility of potable drinking water amongst other things.

With that in mind, a vaccination campaign had been scheduled to take place in these neighborhoods beginning tomorrow March 25, 2021.

The vaccination campaign may however face some challenges as the people in these neighborhoods are of the opinion that the government will be forcing a Covid-19 vaccine on them in the guise of a cholera outbreak.

It gets scarier, considering that the coming of the rainy season might make matters worst for these neighborhoods, which might get blown into a full-scale cholera outbreak if there is no cooperation with health experts.
