Cissy Houston, the celebrated American gospel singer and mother of iconic vocalist Whitney Houston, passed away at the age of 91 on October 7, 2024, at her home in New Jersey. She had been receiving hospice care while battling Alzheimer’s disease.
Her daughter-in-law Pat Houston confirmed her death in a statement to USA TODAY.
“Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We lost the matriarch of our family,” Pat said. “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts.”
Cissy Houston endured the tragic loss of her daughter Whitney on February 11, 2012. Whitney was found dead in what was ruled an accidental drowning in a Beverly Hills bathtub at the age of 48. A renowned singer, actress, film producer, and philanthropist, Whitney Houston was popularly known as “the voice” and remains one of the most awarded entertainers and best-selling music artists of all time.
Heartbroken by her daughter’s passing and the rumors surrounding it, Cissy spoke out in 2013 through USA TODAY, saying, “I want people to really have a sense of what a wonderful, giving person Whitney was. She made a lot of mistakes, but so many people have made mistakes, and haven’t been treated like that, with people talking about them, saying hurtful things that are or aren’t true. I’m just trying to set everyone straight.”
Cissy played a crucial role in mentoring Whitney during her early career, encouraging her to pursue her passion for music. Cissy’s influence is reflected in Whitney’s vocal style and the emotional connection she established with her audience.
Born Emily “Cissy” Houston on September 30, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey, Cissy was an esteemed singer and a significant figure in the music industry, particularly known for her contributions to gospel and soul music. She began her musical journey at a young age, inspired by her family’s deep roots in church music. Cissy became a member of the Sweet Inspirations, a prominent gospel group that gained national recognition in the 1960s.
