Controversy Over Gendarmerie Presence at Bopda’s Residence

The social media sphere has erupted in controversy following the notable deployment of Cameroon’s Gendarmerie officers and the Police at the residence of Hervé Bopda since Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Over the past week, the 45-year-old has been at the center of online discussions, facing accusations of perpetrating abuse against multiple women and men, allegedly transmitting HIV to them.

The initial assumption on social media was that the law enforcement presence was an effort to apprehend the accused predator. However, as the days progressed, skepticism grew among online communities, with some speculating about potential government intervention for Bopda’s protection.

In recently circulated videos, law enforcement officers are still visibly stationed at the front of Hervé Bopda’s residence in Douala. Joanna expressed her concerns, stating, “We could be thinking otherwise whereas these gendarmes are instead guarding his home so that no popular vindictiveness is inflicted on him.”

Another social media user, Ebom Essawo, expressed dismay at the apparent official protection given to an alleged serial rapist, stating, “It is lamentable that this guy receives military honors and not from just any unit. This is their country. And it seems only the population can solve such a problem.”

Various prominent figures in Cameroon, including the Minister of Women Empowerment, Member of Parliament Nourane Foster, and Maurice Kamto, have publicly called on the government to take decisive measures to ensure justice for the victims.

Despite these public appeals, concrete actions have yet to be implemented in response to the requests made by the concerned individuals.
