Council Nursery schools shutdown in Douala 1 over COVID-19 increase

The Coronavirus is believed to be fast spreading in schools across the country.

This has urged the mayor of Douala 1 in the Littoral region of Cameroon to order the shutting down of nursery schools run by the council.

In a release signed by the Mayor Lengue Malapa Monday March 1st 2021, he says “nursery schools should be shutdown from the 1st to the 7th of March 2021”.

“During this period, the council will embark on the project of disinfecting all classes and school campuses to limit the spread of coronavirus pandemic” he adds.

The decision has been received with mixed feelings by parents and teachers of nursery schools at Douala 1.

At Government Nursery School, Bonadoumbe visited Tuesday March 2nd, nursery school kids are in their classes. Teachers here explain that their school is not run by the council and thus are answerable to the inspector of basic education in Douala 1.

Despite this, council nursery schools have respected the decision of local authorities.

“It is unreasonable that they will stop Nursery school kids from attending classes for one week while those of classes one and two of almost the same age group are in school ” Sembeng Gaitang; a parent remarked.

To others. Shutting down council nursery schools at Douala 1 is a clear indication that the respect of COVID 19 preventive measures have been a failure in these schools.

At the time of this report, Mimi Mefo Info received unconfirmed information that the inspector of basic education for Douala 1 is against the decision of the mayor of Douala 1.

Meanwhile, other mission and private nursery schools in the sub division are on with classes unperturbed.
