Cameroon Renaissance Movement fires back at Lekie Chiefs for staging Kamto’s funeral

The Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) has issued strong condemnation in response to a circulating video on social media depicting a staged funeral for the party’s national Chairman, Prof Maurice Kamto.

In a video that has been circulating for several days, individuals dressed as traditional rulers of Lekie Division in the Center Region engaged in incantations around a coffin adorned with the Kamto’s image.

This disturbing footage has sparked consternation, as it falsely suggests the death of a man who is very much alive.

The CRM, in a statement signed by its National Communications Secretary, Joseph Emmanuel Ateba, expressed deep concern over the alarming nature of the video.

The party highlights the immoral and odious nature of the scene, emphasizing that it not only tarnishes the image and honor of Prof Kamto but also constitutes offenses under the country’s Penal Code.

“We have expected in vain to see the reaction of the competent authorities given the odious and immoral nature of such a scene which blatantly undermines the image and honour of the person concerned as well as his family,” the CRM wrote.

“The CRM condemns with the utmost energy this mediaeval, dishonourable, and macabre scene which damages the image of our country.

“We are calling on national and international opinion to act as witnesses to the tribal excesses in our country, of which the regime in place is the instigator,” the release added.

The CRM calls on both national and international communities to bear witness to what it perceives as tribal excesses in the country, attributing them to the current government.

The shocking staging of Kamto’s funeral is interpreted as a political move targeting the CRM party against the 2025 elections.

Kamto’s CRM has suffered setbacks with the regime in organising its rallies in the East and Centre Regions in the past.
