An army post post popularly called ‘Court Yard’ found around the Bali Fon’s Palace in the conflict-hit North West region of Cameroon was today set ablaze early today. The structure which hosted the Court and the Bali Council was attacked by separatist fighters. Videos on social media showed Amba fighters celebrating amidst gunshots after capturing the post.
Movement between Bamenda and Mbengwi in the Momo Division, North West Region has been restricted for 48 hours now. Separatist fighters blocked the road after some of theirs were killed in a raid by the forces of law and order. Due to the restriction, civilians have been walking long distances to get basic provisions and even healthcare.
A cholera outbreak has been announced in Melong, Moungo division, Littoral Region of Cameroon. According to reports, at least two persons have already died from the epidemic. Another affected region is the South West Region, with at least three deaths reported this past week.
Following the announcement of new cholera cases in the Littoral region, health experts in Bamenda, capital city of the North West region have urged the population to observe best hygiene practices. The first cases in the latest outbreak were recorded in Buea, South West Region, with at least three deaths.
The North West Technical Group for the fight against HIV/AIDS has urged Bamenda-based internally displaced persons as well as the general public to turn up for screening. Dr. Gladys Tayong, head of the project noted that it will last ten days. IDPs and other victims of the Anglophone crisis, experts have often warned, remain at high risk of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, owing to their living conditions and the impact on their sexual lives.
Some residents of Bamenda in the North West Region have questioned the City Mayor’s rationale for setting a cleanup campaign on Monday. They fear it is part of government efforts to compel them to work on Mondays that have become ghost towns over the past years. From threats to kidnappings, torture and murder, many have been victims of separatist fighters for opening their shops or carrying out regular activities on Mondays.
A building was today ravaged by fire in Limbe, South West Region. The building located at the Isokolo neighborhood hosted several shops that dealt in building materials. The cause of the fire is unknown.
