Director of Limbe Youth Empowerment Center found dead in office

The Director of the Youth Empowerment Centre in Limbe, South West Region, Frederick Sone, was discovered dead, hanging from a rope in his office building early Thursday morning.

His body was found at around 8:30 am hanging on a TV frame in the reception area of the Divisional Delegation of Youths and Civic Education for Fako, where he shared his office.

A note found on his desk suggested that Sone committed suicide to protect his family, though the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.

“Let me protect my family. I don’t have any person to sacrifice,” read the handwritten note, which was partially in French.

Despite the note, it is not yet confirmed whether Sone took his own life or if foul play was involved.

Medical personnel, law enforcement officers and a state counsel from the Limbe Legal Department arrived on the scene around 10 am Thursday to examine the body before instructing that it be taken to the mortuary.

Sone was last seen by colleagues at around 5 PM on Wednesday, July 10, and appeared to be in good spirits.

However, a cryptic message posted on his WhatsApp status early that Thursday morning warned people to be cautious about the social media sites they visit.

Sone had served as the Director of the Limbe Youth Empowerment Center since 2020.

He was transferred to the Fako Divisional Delegation of Youths and Civic Education in 2016, where he worked for four years before his appointment as director.

Colleagues remember him as a gentleman with a great sense of humor, humility, and honesty.

He leaves behind a pregnant wife, a son, relatives, friends, and colleagues who are mourning his sudden and tragic death.
