Divisional Delegate of Sports and Physical Education Killed in Donga Mantung

A tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening, as Fonye Derick, the Divisional Delegate of Sports and Physical Education for Donga Mantung, lost his life in an attack believed to be carried out by suspected separatist fighters. The attack took place as the vehicle carrying Derick descended the Ntaba Hill, an area that was once renowned for its picturesque landscapes but has unfortunately become plagued by acts of violence.

According to local reports, armed individuals, suspected to be separatist fighters, attacked Derick’s vehicle, resulting in his unfortunate demise.

The passing of Fonye Derick has deeply impacted the community, leaving many in a state of shock. He was widely respected for his dedication to advancing sports and physical education, tirelessly striving to enhance the well-being of young individuals in Donga Mantung and beyond. His sudden and violent death has left a void in the hearts of many who knew and worked with him.

Adding to the tragedy, Derick leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife and a one-month-old baby. This profound loss has overshadowed the joy of welcoming a new life. Colleagues and community members have offered their heartfelt sympathies and support to the grieving family.

“This is a devastating loss for our community. Fonye Derick was not only a dedicated public servant but also a beloved figure in our community.” said one of his colleagues.

The attack brings attention to the ongoing violence in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions, where separatist fighters have been locked in a long-standing conflict with government forces. However, recent evidence from our reports on the Anglophone crisis shows that civilians are largely being targeted more than the warring parties. These killings started in 2017 as the English-speaking regions morphed from a peaceful protest over perceived marginalisation to violence. Since then, a quest for independence has plagued the areas, causing a significant loss of life and a state of unrest.

Fonye Derick’s impact on promoting sports and education as a Divisional Delegate will always be cherished by those fortunate enough to have known him. The lasting impact he made on the youth of Donga Mantung and the community will always be remembered.
