A thief armed with a dagger, identified by MMI as Wato, was burnt to ashes by a mob on Friday, June 30, 2023, in Bonapriso, Douala. The thief had attacked a woman at around 5am, seizing her bag and all its contents.
The woman managed to raise the alarm, and a mob quickly gathered. The thief tried to escape, but he was cornered and beaten. He was then set on fire and burnt to death.
“I was out for my workout as usual when I saw this young man threatening with a long knife his victim. Forcing her to give him her handbag which she did. While on the run, the woman started shouting, alarming the whole neighbourhood who came out, caught the thief, dealt with him and later burnt him as you can see” reported an eyewitness present at the scene.
The incident has sparked outrage in Bonapriso, with residents calling for more to be done to protect them from crime. The police have said that they are investigating the incident and that they will take action against anyone found to be involved in the mob violence.
