Jean De Dieu Sietambi, a detainee at the Akwa South Gendarmerie Unit in Douala has died in detention.
According to gendarmarie sources, Jean De Dieu Sietambi committed suicide by hanging in his detention cell with the aid of his trousers.
The commander of the Gendarmerie unit says Sietambi was arrested in connection to an armed robbery attack in the Dalip neighborhood of Douala three weeks ago.
He and his gang reportedly robbed a Cameroonian of 11 million francs cfa according security sources which futher say he was found with two automatic guns upon interrogations.
However the narrative of the Gendarmerie officer has been contested by family members and lawyer of the deceased, who accuse the forces of law and order of torturing Sietambi to death.
