Douala: Multiple Fallen Electric Poles Breed Danger to Population

Amongst a list of concerns yet to be resolved in Cameroon’s economic capital are the issue of fallen electric poles.

Most of them often have live cables attached to them. It is the case with the Bilongue neighborhood in Douala.

Residents have complained several times about fallen electric poles to authorities, most often without response.

Students and pupils are most exposed to these electric poles, which have spent months on the streets, seemingly abandoned.

According to residents, sometimes children are most often seen recklessly playing closer to these poles, with little clue about the dangers it poses.

“This phenomenon is the new normal in Douala. Killing is not only by conflicts or wars… These abandoned poles are a form of killing,” a resident of the neighborhood said.
