Douala: night watch and dog trainer killed by company dog

By Mike Klaus

A security company in charge of training security dogs at the Douala seaport is currently under investigation after being hit by two horrendous scandals in the past two months.

A security agent and a professional dog trainer have both died after being ferociously attacked by one of the dogs being trained.

The most recent attack by the dogs happened on July 5, 2023, prompting an immediate reaction from the authorities given the frequencies of the acts of aggression from the guard dogs.

While carrying out investigations on site, officers of the gendarmerie brigade of the seaport reveal to have uncovered some irregularities in the treatment of these dogs by the trainers.

“The dog trainer had as a habit the tendency of taking 24-hour time off from the dogs, and throughout this period, these dogs are often kept unfed,” says Flore Naami Ikot, brigade commander of the Port Gendarmerie.

“He also often does not take the time to lock these dogs appropriately in their cages… In one of the cases, the night watchman had gone to feed these dogs after they had been starved for a prolonged period, and he got viciously attacked by the animals.” the commander added.

Further investigations are being carried out to establish more facts about the company. Meanwhile, the company has been temporarily closed by the Gendarmerie, and the dogs moved to another location.
