Douala: PCRN suspends deputy Mayor over media comments

The political dust raised by Cameroon’s first regional election in the Littoral region is yet to settle.
The Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation (PCRN) has suspended its militant, Joseph Espoir Biyo from the party indefinitely.

In a release signed by Wouri Divisional Coordinator of the party Monday, December 13, 2020, Joseph Espoir Biyong who doubles as 6th deputy mayor at the Douala 5 council has been banned from talking to the media in the name of the PCRN.

Simplice Ngnocheu, coordinator of PCRN in Wouri division says any media outing by Mr. Biyong during this period of suspension will be attributed to him as a person and not the party headed by Cabral Libii Li Lingue.

The decisions were taken in the course of an emergency meeting chaired by the divisional coordinator of PCRN to evaluate the just ended regional election.

PCRN’s sanction of the deputy mayor follows his media reaction shortly after vote counting at Lycee Joss in Douala on the the day of the regional election. To Joseph Espoir Biyong, the voting was marked by excessive fraud perpetrated by councilors of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Biyong regretted why PCRN engaged in running for such an election that to him is a slap in the face of democracy.

Despite this, Joseph Espoir Biyong continues to exercise his administrative functions as the 6th deputy mayor of Douala 5 under the PCRN party.

In the centre region, PCRN national executive earlier on dissolved the divisional executive of the party in Nyong et EKelle division. This is because despite having the highest number of councilors in the division, the CPDM party surprisingly won in the division.

Political commentators think PCRN has come out of the regional election divided and fragilised with different sanctions hanging on militants (councilors ) that took part in the election.
