Douala University students decry campus’ bushy nature

By Amina Hilda

Students of the Pk17 campus of the University of Douala are decrying the bushy nature of the school environment.

Some students said the overwhelming grass around the school campus has fueled mosquitoes and triggered attacks on students.

“We are really inside the bush. Mosquitoes everywhere. The building has been engulfed by grass,” a student told Equinoxe Television.

Students also see a possibility of snakes and other reptiles, which are finding refuge in the overgrowth, crawling into classrooms.

“We don’t know what is hiding within it because snakes could come out and bite us, since we usually sit around here,” a student said.

Reports say female students of the Pk 17 campus of the University of Douala have suffered rape and attacks in the past and others have been robbed.

Students say the campus’ unkempt nature provides an easy refuge and escape route for attackers.

“I’m always afraid people could hide within the grass and do anything to us, because before, there have been several rape cases here,” a young student of the institution said.

Another student told Equinoxe TV: “When I thought of studying in the University, I imagined a very luxurious environment, where we are well seated, and breathe good air.”

The students are hoping that the authorities concerned will step in and make the school campus safer for learning.

The environment of the University of Douala contrasts that of other state-owned higher learning institutions like the University of Buea. At UB, the campus is kept fresh and clean all the time with the help of campus workers.

Unlike most of the regular teaching and administrative staff, these workers are employed by the University authority.
