Douala Urban Disorder: Occupants of sidewalks to be ‘cleared’

The City Mayor of Douala, Roger Mbassa Ndine has announced in a press release February 26, that all occupants of road sidewalks will soon be cleared out by the council so as to maintain them as pedestrian pavements.

The residential districts of Bonaprisso, Bonanjo and other areas of the Akwa district have been earmarked as the major areas for this operation.

The operation has been termed by the Douala Urban Community as the Operation “Return the Sidewalks to Pedestrians”.

In prelude to this forthcoming operation, the Mayor has informed that a team of investigators will visit some of this areas and mark them with crisscrosses as a sign of further rehabilitation and to remind the occupants of these sidewalks to vacate them as soon as they can.

The City Mayor mentioned that the decision to evict all occupants of Douala sidewalks comes within the framework of the fight against Urban Disorder in the city, a fight which he says has been on for years but has on several occasions faced drawbacks due to the resistance of some of the traders who have occupied these sidewalks.

He has however reiterated equally that the operation this time is destined to take positive strides towards returning order to the economic capital.
