DR Congo: Coach Florent Ibenge, four players test COVID-19 positive

The Democratic Republic of Congo will play their second match of the African Nations Championship against Lybia without the head coach Florent Ibenge Ikwanga and four key players of the team.

The head coach and the players that include goalkeeper Ley Matampi, Guy Serge Mukumi Mulamba, Doxa Gikanji, and Andy Bikoko Lobulka have been tested positive for covid-19.

Earlier in a pre-match press conference Wednesday, January 20th, 2021, coach Florent Ibengue regretted that results of tests conducted on Tuesday, January 19th was still unavailable.

In his words, We did COVID 19 tests on Tuesday and up to now (Wednesday) we have not received the results. We, therefore, don’t know which players to align for the match against Lybia”.

The leopards of DR Congo will take on the Mediterranean Knights of Lybia from 5:00pm Thursday, January 21st at Japoma stadium in Douala.

DR Congo counts three points after defeating Congo in their first outing. Lybia will be out to win given that it has a point after playing a draw in their first match against Niger.

Football pundits say the situation can be a big blow to DR Congo in the Championship.
