Dr. Simon Munzu appointed a member of the Commonwealth Observer Group to monitor Kenya elections

Cameroonian-born, Dr. Simon Munzu, has been appointed a member of the Commonwealth Observer Group, (COG), to monitor upcoming Kenya’s general elections.

Kenyans are due to choose a new president on August 9, 2022.

Dr. Munzu was appointed alongside 20 others including Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana, who is leading the team.

The 20-man delegation was announced in London on July 12, 2022, by Patricia Scotland, Secretary-general of the Commonwealth.

According to a press release from the Commonwealth head office, they have been given the mandate to observe and consider the factors affecting the credibility of the electoral process as a whole and to judge whether elections have been conducted according to the standards for democratic elections to which Kenya has committed itself, including legislation and relevant regional, Commonwealth and international commitments.

Dr. Simon Munzu, who hails from the South West region of Cameroon is a former UN deputy special representative for Côte d’Ivoire, a position he held among many others within the United Nations.

He is also a member of the English Bar.
