Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o, Former Minister Spends First Night in Prison.

Cameroon’s former Minister Delegate at the Presidency of the Republic in charge of Defence has been detained at the Kondengui Prison in Yaounde for alledgely embezzling state funds when he was a member of government.

The one time minister of transport spent close to seventy two hours at the special criminal court in Yaounde for interrogation.

Edgar Alain Abraham Mebe Ngo’o is being accused of diverting huge sum of state money to his private account, when he was serving as the Minister Delegate at the Presidency of the Republic in charge of Defence.
The detention of the former member of government is to permit further investigation on the veracity of what he is accused of.
Local media reports say the sum of 3 billion FCFA was recovered in cash, at the residence of Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o.

Investigators are also said to have found 448 Suits, 48 vehicles used for rents and 20 VIP vehicles among other assets.

Reliable sources say, the wife of Mr Mebe Ngo’o, Madam Bernaddette Mebe Ngo’o and some of her close relatives will equally be interrogated on their alledged role in the embezzlement deal.

Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o is being detained alongside some of his close aids like Maxime Mbangue Former advicer at the ministry of defense, Victor Emmanuel Menye Assistant General Manager of SCB Bank and Colonel Joel Mboutou former defence attaché at the Cameroon Embassy in Morocco.

This week in Yaounde, security forces searched the residence of Mr. Mebe Ngo’o as part of the investigation.
The detention of Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o comes to lengthen the list of former members of government that have been detained with others already sentenced under the “Operation SparrowHawk” for either mismanagement or embezzlement of state funds when they were in office.

The Operation Sparrowhawk, a drive launched by President Paul Biya’s government in 2006 to fight corruption, has not stopped government ministers from going to jail for misappropriation.

Even the Special Criminal Court created to try embezzlers of public funds has not been able to recover stolen state money from indicted officials.

Cameroon was ranked 136th out of 175 countries in Transparency International’s 2014 corruption perceptions index.
