Elephants invade farmlands in Campo, cause panic

Residents of Campo, in the South region, have been in distress following a recent invasion of their plantations by elephants.

The Elephants according to the locals devastated the plantations, destroying all the crops along the way, thus jeopardizing the harvests.

“When we arrived, they had already eaten everything in the fields. They walked over the plantain and uprooted the cassava tubers like human beings,” a local explained.

The villagers have therefore been left with no option but to use traditional methods to scare away the beasts.

“Yesterday my mother and I were in the fields, we brought the old barrels, the old basins. We started banging to drive them away and then we lit a big fire,” the resident added.

Accusing fingers are pointed at the company Camvert (Cameroun vert sarl), belonging to entrepreneur, Aboubakar Al Fatih.

The company aims at razing 60,000 hectares of forest in Campo and Nieté. According to the Greenpeace association, this project is “… a real scam for local and indigenous communities whose survival depends largely or essentially on the forest.”

Camvert cuts down these trees, thus destroying the living environment of the elephants which then migrate towards the spaces reserved for human habitats and farming.
