Facebook Marketplace Scammer Targets Cameroonians

Cameroonians are being warned about a potential scam on Facebook Marketplace, allegedly perpetrated by a user under the profile name Marie Paule Bedzeme.

Kelly, a concerned Cameroonian who wishes to remain anonymous, told MMI about her experience. “She [Bedzeme] sells items at very affordable prices,” Kelly explained. “But once you contact her, she directs you to a WhatsApp group where she finalises the sale and sends money transfer details.”

According to Kelly, after sending the money, Bedzeme promises delivery within three hours but then disappears. “She removes you from the group and blocks you on all platforms,” Kelly said. “I’m certain she has multiple groups and accounts to target more people.”

The WhatsApp transactions allegedly involve an MTN mobile money account under the name Judith Rolande Matoukam with the number 654002127. Kelly also shared concerns that Bedzeme might be using a fake online persona. “She claims to be married with kids, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s part of the act,” Kelly said.

While Kelly’s individual loss might be small, she fears Bedzeme could be targeting a large number of people. “Imagine if she scams hundreds of people this way,” Kelly urged. “I hope sharing my story helps raise awareness and protects others from falling victim.”

MMI’s investigations showed that there were many WhatsApp groups with the name BBOY.TJ. Collection. One of the links shared by Kelly was followed by MMI to join one of the groups. Upon locating the group admins, we wrote to them about the concerns raised by Kelly and others, asking for comment. They quickly removed us from the group and refused to respond to our questions.

MMI has reached out to Facebook for comment on the allegations and will update this story if a response is received.

If you suspect you have been targeted by this scam, you can report it to Facebook directly and contact local authorities with the mobile money number.
