Fake BIR soldier arrested in Maroua

A man posing as member of the Rapid Intervention Battalion, BIR, involved in cases of assault in Maroua, capital of the Far North Region, has been arrested.

He was arrested alongside a gang of 4 bandits. They are Mouhamed Salissou, 35, Fadile Abdoulaye, (26), accomplice Yizida Moussa, 32, and Ibrahim Rabbé, 34-year-old who happened to be the gang leader.

They were arrested after they attacked a certain Mahamadou Abdoulaye in the Lougol neighborhood in Maroua. He was rushed to hospital with a lost eye and his motorcycle taken away.

A few days later, the city’s central police station received a complaint from a man whose name we got as Saïdou. Saïdou had filed a complaint against the fake BIR soldier in a locality called Avion Meles.

The supposed soldier asked to be dropped off at the same place where Mahamadou, another attacked young man, had suffered severe injuries. Once there, Avion Meles attempted to seize Saïdou’s motorcycle. The latter resisted and managed to identify his attacker.

“After crying for help, the inhabitants rushed to the scene. The police were alerted and they immediately arrived at the scene,” recounts a source.

The suspect was arrested and questioned.
He later admitted that he bought his BIR outfit from a soldier whom the police are yet to lay hands on.
