Fans outraged as Yemi Alade and crew denied Canadian visa

Fans of Grammy winning Nigerian singer, Yemi Alade have expressed dismay with Canadian authorities for denying the crooner and her crew visas. The ‘Johhny’ crooner and her team were meant to perform at the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique but their hopes were cut short.

The festival co-organiser, Suzanne Rousseau is quoted as stating that the visa denial was on grounds that Alade and crew might not return to Nigeria upon arriving Canada:

“… the musicians were refused, saying they have to guarantee that they have enough financial means that will make them go back to their country.”

“Is this a joke? Why would Yemi Alade not return fron Canada when she makes huge money on the continental stage?” quizzed a fan on twitter.

To another, Alade has been grossly disrespected, considering her impact on afro and pop cultures in Africa and beyond. To him, “… she has made a mark for herself in the international scene in a male dominated industry and she’s also got a Grammy certification…”

Alade on her part, confirmed that she won’t be performing at the concert, but appeared to take offense at the media for their reporting of the issue.

The media, she stated, is using her name “as click bait,” and described the reports as “verbatim journalism.”

33-year-old Yemi Alade is one of Africa’s most celebrated female African singers, with multiple awards and hit songs to her credit.

She has also headlined multiple top shoes and events, and boasts of hundreds of thousands of followers across multiple social media platforms.
