Far North Governor threatens to close mosques disrespecting COVID-19 barrier measures

As Muslims dive into fasting in preparation for the feast of Ramadan, the Governor of the Far North Region has warned that he will go to extreme lengths, even as much as closing down mosques that will fail to respect COVID-19 barrier measures.

The fast for the month of Ramadan began on April 12, 2021. It is a period that witnesses more Muslims going to mosques more often. In view of this, the Governor of the Far North Region, Midjiyawa Bakary held a meeting with religious leaders of the region.

During the meeting, the Governor stressed the need for a continuous adherence to barrier measures in preventing the Covid-19 pandemic. The Governor also warned the leaders that he will not hesitate, should the need arise, to shut down mosques if barrier measures are disrespected during the fasting period.

“From the first day of the Ramadan, the mosques which will go outside the prescription of the barrier measures will be closed and it is non-negotiable,” he declared.

For the Governor, the awareness and respect for the barrier measures must be reinforced so that the Holy Month of Ramadan takes place without any Covid-19 case hikes.
