Far North: Health Minister hands relief package to flood victims

The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manouda Malachie, has handed over foodstuff and other relief materials to some persons who were affected by recent floods in the Far North Region.

Dr Manaouda led an assessment team to the affected areas where floods killed at least 17 people.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, torrential rains that have been raging since the end of August 2024 have caused a lot of damage in this part of the country, with a sufficiently worrying toll.

“So far no epidemic has been reported, but it should be noted that nearly 60,777 households are affected, including 123,441 children under 5 years old and 26,591 pregnant women affected; 10,240 patients identified and treated in different local health facilities, all on a war footing,” the Ministry said.

It added that 17 people were killed as the flood destroyed homes and cut off roads.

The Minister said the toll is already alarming, explaining why the assessment mission was necessary.

The floods affected several areas, especially Yagoua.

The government has set up a monitoring team with the major objective of avoiding a resurgence of epidemics and/or pandemics that could take advantage of the situation to increase the toll, particularly on the human level.

“It should be noted that major health dangers are constantly looming over the populations in this part of the country. These include cholera, malaria, and other highly feared waterborne diseases,” the Ministry said.

It added that several measures have been taken to effectively contain the slightest onset of a crisis reported by the various sensors set up by the system.
