Fire Destroys Three Shops at Batouri Central Market

A fire broke out at the Batouri Central Market on the night of Saturday, January 10, spilling into the early hours of Sunday, January 11, 2026, destroying three shops.

The flames reportedly started at about 9:00 p.m. and spread quickly within part of the market. The fire was eventually brought under control through the combined efforts of local residents, supported by officers of the gendarmerie and the police. No loss of life was reported, but significant material damage was recorded.

The incident marks the fifth time the Batouri Central Market has been affected by fire, raising renewed concerns over the safety of traders and the wider population.

The repeated outbreaks have heightened fears about inadequate fire prevention and emergency response mechanisms in the town.

The Divisional Officer of Batouri, Wenceslas Evaga, visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage.

During his visit, he ordered the opening of an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Residents and traders in Batouri have once again expressed regret over the absence of a fire brigade unit in the town. They say the lack of professional firefighting services leaves markets and residential areas highly vulnerable to fires.
Batouri, a century-old town, continues to face growing calls for improved security and emergency infrastructure to better protect lives and property.
