Football: UMS Loum requests suspension of Samuel Eto’o, FECAFOOT President

Cameroonian Football Club UMS of Loum has requested a 6-year suspension of Samuel Eto’o Fils, current President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT)

The Moungo football club made the request highlighting the contract signed last May between the president of FECAFOOT and the sports betting company 1Xbet.

The football club accuses him of being in a conflict of interest situation following the contract with the sports betting company.

The club filed a complaint with the Cameron football governing body’s ethics commission on Monday, June 26, 2023.

A press release signed by the Deputy Secretary General of UMS, Pierre Tcheuko, notes that the preamble to the federation’s code of ethics provides that the body “has the particular responsibility of ensuring the integrity and image of the Cameroonian football”.

He stated that the contract between Samuel Eto’o and 1xbet, signed on May 26 in Douala exposes Cameroonian football to negative influences, contrary to the principles of sports ethics.

Prior to this reaction by UMS, some Cameroonians had earlier expressed mixed reactions following the ambassadorial deal signed by the FECAFOOT president.

To some, signing a contract with such a company is baseless and not to be applauded. Meanwhile, others were of the opinion that the president has every right to engage in such a deal.
